Time is money am I right??? Okay let me explain- you're about to go home from work, or go to the mall, about to drive to a friend's house ~or drive anywhere~ and for so many of us, the first thing we do is turn on our favorite radio station or plug our phone/iPod in to listen to music. I'm guilty of it, too. Music relaxes me. I can find the perfect songs to relate to my current mood. Sometimes I want to just not think about anything and turn my music up as loud as I can. Of course that's okay. I do it pretty often, actually. Quite recently though, I was bored with the same songs, there was nothing new on the radio that I liked, and I decided I should try to better utilize my driving time. So I gave a few podcasts a try. I know I know I know they seem lame BUT THAT'S NOT THE CASE. Podcasts can actually be really really interesting, and they can be the same "get away" for you as your music playlist. There are podcasts out there about anything and everything. I haven't even gotten a chance to fully dive into all the different categories to explore, but I already know there are episodes out there that you would really enjoy. Specifically, though, there are podcasts out there that you can learn from and that will help you grow. If you're not striving to learn more or try new things, you're not growing as a person. Period. And something as simple as listening to a new podcast in the car between destinations is really going to open your eyes when you find a good one. Some benefits to turning off the radio and listening to an informational podcast include but are not limited to:
You can gain a new perspective. Sometimes you just need to branch out and listen to something you normally wouldn't, and great things will come from it. You can browse through the top rated podcasts and pick one on a topic you wouldn't usually put time aside for. There's a good chance you will learn something from it or see something from a different point of view!
You can get inspired. I personally love listening to podcasts having to with health, wellness, and nutrition (duh). If I research which podcast to put time aside for or if someone trustworthy recommends one I'd like, I rarely am disappointed when I hit play. There is just SO much information to be shared, and there are some really intelligent podcast hosts who want to spread news they have come across on all sorts of categories. The endless information is empowering! It kind of makes me want to one day be a podcast host!!!
The information is up to date. Podcasts are all clearly dated, and the hosts who share information only really discuss relevant topics with the newest research to back their words up. There are TONS of books out there in the world discussing nutrition and diets, but so many are outdated and it's hard to keep up with the most current information. This is where I find myself turning to podcasts that have trustworthy guests and hosts who discuss the most recent research and findings.
Episodes are FREE. No need to say more on that :-)
You can sound like the smartest person in your friend group. LOL okay but really- there is so much great information out there, and it's all accessible right there in your smartphone. As of June 2019, there were over 30 MILLION podcast episodes. So instead of listening to Ariana Grande's new song for the 85th time, give a podcast a try.
If you're looking for a health and wellness podcast, you have to give these a listen:
- Episode 376. Vegetable Oil - The Silent Killer w/ Dr. Cate Shanahan
- Episode 415. On Women's Health, Post-Birth Control Syndrome, and Brain Injuries - Dr. Jolene Brighten
-There are so many of episodes, I haven't gotten through even half of them, but the majority of Dave's episodes are so informative. Each one I listen to, I realize how little I know about about anything lol
- Episode 31. How to Buy the Best Extra-Virgin Olive Oil | Nicholas Coleman
- Episode 52. Treating ADD Naturally | Vanessa Fitzgerald
-Also every other episode Max has released... This podcast series is loaded with great info
- Episode 23. Rachael DeVaux- Every Health Eating Question, Answered: Losing Weight, Balancing Hormones, Healing Gut Issues & More LIVE FROM SEATTLE
- Episode 7. Dave Asprey on the Little Known Secret to Energy and Longevity
- Episode 26. Talking Fab 4, Her Upcoming Book, and Pregnancy Health with Kelly LeVeque of Be Well By Kelly
- Episode 44. Hormones, Periods & Skin with WellBynd Co-Founders Dr. Erica Arcuri & Dr. Emily FitzGerald
So to recap- why should you be listening to something other than the radio in the car?? Because honestly, listening to music during every single car ride is wasting your valuable time. Time is money people. Take advantage of your free time while you're driving and optimize it to learn new things!!
If you have a favorite podcast, let me know about it in the comments! I'd love to give it a listen.
